Ghost Ship Residency

Giving Ghost Ship artists the time and space to focus on your art in our charming little town on the great Lake Superior.

Here at the Ghost Ship, we’re known for being home to artists and outcasts in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Our residency is for those creative souls who are deadly serious about their medium, actively advancing their career as an artist, and looking to take a break from their typical routine.

Duration

Residencies can range from 2-6 weeks. You must be working full-time (40+ hours week) on your project for the duration of your residency.

Accommodations

You’ll be staying in a private apartment directly above the gallery that includes a full kitchen/studio area, bathroom, laundry, and large living area. You’ll need to climb a set of stairs to get to the apartment.

Ghost Ship is a very old building so you’ll hear music through the floors and the general bustle of activities below. We’re also home to eight working artists who have 24-hour access to the gallery and their personal studio spaces.

In the heart of downtown Washburn, you’ll be within walking distance of restaurants, bars, groceries, and Lake Superior.

Costs

The residency is free. You must cover your own travel, supplies, materials, and general cost of living during your stay. Ghost Ship does have a small art supply shop on site as well. Feel free to ask what we carry.

Because this is a free residency, we have just a few asks while you’re here to help promote Ghost Ship:

  • Include at least one opportunity for the public to connect with you and your work during your experience.

  • Actively post to social media and promote Ghost Ship Gallery throughout your residency.

  • Allow Ghost Ship to share updates about your residency on our social channels and use any photos or videos taken in our marketing.

Proposal requirements

True to our nature, this is choose your own adventure and there aren’t many rules. We’re open to a variety of mediums and creative ideas for how you’d like to spend your time on board.

Submit a brief proposal that includes 4 paragraphs:

  • Paragraph 1 - Tell us a little bit about yourself.

  • Paragraph 2 - Share how many weeks you’ll need for your proposed project and what you hope to accomplish in that time. Examples could be, painting a set number of pieces, creating a series of work using a new technique or medium, a plein air tour around the peninsula, incorporating local subjects or material, writing a set number of songs, or creating a short illustrated book.

  • Paragraph 3 - Tell us how your residency project will advance your art career.

  • Paragraph 4 - Explain how you plan to engage the public in your work and how the public will benefit from it.

Please note this is a solo residency and best suited for self-starters who like to spend time working alone.
