I am a former academic/scientist, who has been engaged in a variety of woodworking methods for many years. I have gutted and remodeled entire houses, built cabinetry, furniture, a canoe, refinished family heirlooms, and hacked together innumerable items of necessity.

Sometime around 2019, I was captivated by woodturning when I discovered you could transform a stick of firewood into something useful in about 20 minutes. Despite the immediacy of woodturning, what I enjoy more is the challenge of creating a well-designed object that is as useful as it is beautiful.

I have focused primarily on turning bowls, which require clearly defined elements to create a strong, fundamental form. A well-designed bowl will also feel ‘lively’ in your hands, so my pieces are relatively lightweight and finished with natural oils that let you feel the wood. More recently, I have begun to explore adding decorative elements to my wood-turnings.

I enjoy finding ways to emphasize the natural features of wood, such as bark-edged rims, unusual grain patterns, and warped shapes. I have also been playing with minimalist designs and color accents as part of the bowl design.

My genuine hope is to make a bowl that someone ends up using everyday. One that is a little surprising when you pick it up, holds anything without complaining, and doesn’t misbehave at the table.
